Front brake disc carriers in aluminium help reduce rotating mass, while cam belt covers, silencer guards and front fender in carbon fibre reduce weight by 1kg (2.2lb). The distinctive racing gold coloured 5-spoke wheels of the Ducati Monster 1100-S give it an elegant style and the same sporting look as historic Ducati racing models, while the Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa tyres provide the very best performance.
1100 S colours
The top of the range Ducati Monster 1100-S comes in traditional red with red Trellis frame or
sophisticated pearl white with contrasting matte black frame. Both colours use wheels finished in
racing gold giving the schemes a rich racing feel. The 1100 S can be further personalised from a
choice of ten additional colour schemes available within the innovative Monster Art program, some
historic schemes of which are complemented perfectly by the gold wheels.
Dream Personalisation
Making the Monster a one-off with Ducati’s complete range of accessories is easier than ever.
Whether creating a whole new look, improving performance further or simply styling the Monster, the accessory collection is intended to make the Monster experience even more rewarding. Both versions of the Monster 1100 already come factory-personalised with removable single seat covers and neat micro-bikini fairings.
From there, interchangeable tank covers offer an easy way to personalise the Monster, while carbon fibre and titanium exhausts enhance the performance and sound of the Desmo engine.
Performance-hungry owners can choose carbon fibre components to make the Monster even lighter or the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) to analyse the performance data of the Monster and rider. Alternatively, the extra comfortable touring seats and soft side luggage for seat and tank are perfect for longer, more relaxed rides.
Monster Art – ‘Logomania’
Every model in the Monster family can be personalised using ‘Logomania’, the second collection of the innovative Monster Art project and a stunning tribute to famous Ducati logos and colour schemes that span more than 50 years of authentic brand heritage.
Changing the colour and character of any model in the current Monster line-up in just 10 minutes is the
genius of the Monster Art program, and a feature that passionately supports the Monster culture of
customisation. Consisting of tank panels, micro-bikini fairing, single-seat cover and front mudguard, the kits have now become a modern canvas in the world of motorcycle art and a unique method of Monster personalisation.
First introduced in 2009, the Monster Art project offered an additional 10 colours over the 3 standard
factory options with a collection called ‘Colour Therapy’. The latest chronologically organised collection, ‘Logomania’ , retains the 3 most desirable schemes and introduces 7 new ones, effectively enabling a 50 year style shift in just 10 minutes.
‘Logomania’ colour schemes
Ducati Sport 100
Built in the race-driven mid-1950s, the Ducati Sport 100 used engineering solutions that had taken Ducati to victory in the Motogiro D’Italia. The new Monster Art scheme of the same name, in blue and silver and proudly presenting the Ducati Meccanica tank logo, stands as a tribute to Fabio Taglioni’s Ducati Sport 100.
Ducati Mach 1
The 1960s saw Ducati’s single-cylinder engines continue to develop even more sports oriented
specifications, and it all started with the Ducati 250 Mach 1. Some 50 years later, the style is now captured in this distinctive scheme of red and white and, again, carrying the historic Ducati Meccanica tank logo.
Imola 72
This scheme celebrates the historic Imola 200 race in 1972, when Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari proved Ducati’s L-Twin engine with a victorious 1-2 finish. In replica metaflake silver with the classic 70s Ducati logo, the tank also sports a fibreglass colour strip that mimics the simple fuel level indicator typical of that era.
IOM78
Multiple World Champion, Mike Hailwood®, came out of retirement in 1978 to race in the Isle of man TT aboard a Ducati 900 SS. His historic victory there and the subsequent production of the Mike Hailwood Replica Ducati in 1979 is now relived in this memorable colour scheme of red, white and green complete with period Ducati tank logo.
Pantah
The Pantah took Ducati into the 1980s in its own particular style, sporting a Trellis frame and the first Ducati engine to use belt-driven camshafts. Recreating the typical Pantah graphics of that era, this Monster Art scheme presents a grey finish with bold angled flashes of red and blue across the tank.
Darmah
The Ducati Darmah of the 70s and 80s was a naked model that used basic colours and stripes that captured the very essence of that era. The black and gold used to great effect during those years has now been combined with the period Ducati logo and remembered in ‘Logomania’.
Ducati Corse
2010 sees the first year of competition for the official factory MotoGP and World Superbike teams with the new Ducati Corse logo. First launched at the end of 2009 with celebratory 1198 R SpecialEdition and 1198 S Corse Special Edition models, the new logo is now further celebrated with its own "Logomania" scheme within the Monster Art collection.
From the 'Colour Therapy' collection
Lilla Glamour
Continued from the first ‘Colour Therapy’ collection, ‘Lilla Glamour’ has proved to be one of the most highly selected schemes in Italy and a reflection of the current trend for retro colours in the fashion world. Both shocking and soothing at the same time, this thoroughly modern colour challenges motorcycle convention in true Monster style.
Arancione Scrambler
Originally built for the American market of the early 60s, the image of the Scrambler soon became highly desirable in Europe where motorcyclists were attracted to the model’s American dirt bike styling. The Scrambler, with its bright orange colour, took on a cult-like following that still exists to this day and the continued use of this scheme in the second edition of Monster Art is testament to its incredible popularity.
Giallo Ducati
As Ducati moved through the 90s and into the new millennium, there were two main colours that entered the imaginations of motorcyclists dreaming of Ducati: Classic Ducati red and bright Ducati yellow. The strong following for this style has ensured the continued inclusion of ‘Giallo Ducati’ in the latest edition of Monster Art.
2011 Ducati Monster 1100-S Technical Details
ENGINE
Desmodromics
The incredible valve performances of our engines are only possible because of Ducati's unique Desmodromic system, where valve closure is activated mechanically. At high rpm it would be almost impossible for the valve to follow the steep closure profile of the cam lobe if it were relying upon a normal valve spring. With the Desmo system, the valve is closed mechanically with the same accuracy as it is opened, enabling steep cam profiles and radical cam timings. This system is used on every single Ducati power unit including our world-beating Superbike and Desmosedici MotoGP engines.
Power & torque curves
The Monster 1100 produces 95hp (69,8kW) @ 7.500rpm and 75,9 lb-ft (10,5kgm) of torque @ 6000rpm
Exhaust system
Providing a deep and rich exhaust tone within current noise and emissions regulations is no mean feat, but the Monster definitely provides the L-Twin sound famous of Ducati. Its bold, high-level twin mufflers also make a striking style statement. The exhaust system has one Lambda probe dedicated to each cylinder, enabling precise fuelling for a smoother power delivery as well as complying with current emission regulations. The Monster 1100 has a specially designed exhaust system which features an electronically controlled exhaust valve.
Vacural® crankcases
The two-valve engine on the Monster 1100 features an all-new crankcase which significantly reduces overall engine weight. They are produced using the same innovative Vacural® technology that Ducati previously applied only to Supersport models. This method of production relies on vacuum die-casting, which improves the quality of the casting by avoiding porosity, air pockets and oxidation. This enables greater dimensional accuracy and higher ductility for the aluminium alloy. Ducati designers have drawn upon the benefits of this innovative process, redefining the conformation and thickness of the sides on the new crankcase using finite element simulations (FEM) and tests, which resulted in achieving the required reliability standards as well as attaining a significant weight reduction of 3kg (6.6lb) compared to previous versions of the 1100cc engines.
Dry clutch
To underline the sports side of the bike, the Monster 1100 is fitted with Ducati’s very own dry clutch, which offers a variety of customisation options with the Ducati Performance accessories.
Desmodue
The Monster 1100 power unit is the legendary 1100cc, air cooled, Dual Spark L-Twin engine whose 95hp gives it that unmistakable Ducati sound. Developed for an incredibly flexible power delivery, the 1100 Desmodromic engine provides enough torque to exit the most challenging of corners. The impressive 10.5kgm (75.9lb-ft) of torque, typical of the Ducati L-Twin engines, will excite with every twist of the throttle
CHASSIS
5-spoke gold wheels
The extremely lightweight aluminium alloy Y-shaped, 5-spoke wheels reduce unsprung weight and improve agility. The 3.50x17 front wheel is fitted with a 120/70ZR tyre while the rear 5.50x17 wheel has a 180/55ZR. The result is lightweight, precise steering that is extremely responsive at all speeds while giving the vehicle exceptional stability. The distinctive racing gold coloured 5-spoke wheels of the Monster 1100 S give it an elegant style and the same sporting look as historical Ducati racing models.
Alloy disc centres
Front brake disc carriers in aluminium help reduce rotating mass.
Brembo brakes
The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster a ‘tough’ look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is chill-cast using aluminium in its most noble form. Gravity cast and heat treated, the component achieves the best mechanical characteristics as well as reduced final weight for improved handling.
Ohlins forks
The high performance, fully adjustable 43mm Öhlins forks, which sport low friction titanium nitride-treated fork sliders, respond effortlessly to every imperfection in the tarmac. Beyond their advanced engineering solutions, one of the most important characteristics of Öhlins forks is their ability to communicate the condition and quality of the tyre-to-road contact patch, a feature that puts you in superior control.
Ohlins rear suspension
Fully adjustable rising-rate Öhlins rear suspension unit. Using the proven ‘cantilever’ system, the steeply angled rear unit compresses in a movement non-linear to the rear swingarm radius, thus achieving a progressive action. This enables easy access to the spring pre-load and rebound damping adjuster, while eliminating the weight of the rocker-arm mechanism.
Lightweight construction
The ‘less-is-more’ philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati’s never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles, but these new models have succeeded in being even more ‘pared down’ than their predecessors. The Monster 1100 is the lightest bike in its category.
Single-sided swingarm
The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster a ‘tough’ look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is chill-cast using aluminium in its most noble form. Gravity cast and heat treated, the component achieves the best mechanical characteristics as well as reduced final weight for improved handling.
Monster Trellis
An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of the Monster. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the chassis design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity. A separate, all aluminium sub-frame saves weight and adds a pleasing continuity with the aluminium footrest hangers and matte finished swingarm.
Ergonomics
The heavily tapered and deeply sculpted fuel tank cover allows maximum comfort and control. The narrowing of the bike's ‘waist’ has the same effect as lowering the seat height, making it easier for more riders to get both feet flat on the floor. The steering-lock is vastly improved with a useful 64 degrees of lock-to-lock steering travel. Incredible attention to detail has gone into maximising the effective steering-lock.
EQUIPMENT
Empowering Controls
The Monster 1100 features radial pumps with adjustable levers on beautifully shaped aluminium tapered handlebars.
Instrumentation
Visually simple digital instrumentation provides an array of data on command or, at a glance, just speed and revs. Information available at your fingertip include: scheduled maintenance warning, oil temperature, trip odometer, lap time, fuel reserve, warning light for low oil pressure, turn signals, over-rev warning, immobilizer and neutral warning light.
ABS
For the first time since its debut, the Ducati Monster will be available with ABS (anti-lock braking system). Unlike the majority of motorcycle ABS set-ups, this system has the advantage of ensuring a more natural braking ‘feel’ for the rider. ABS system is available as an optional.
Carbon fibre silencer covers
Carbon fibre silencer guards add exclusivity to the best Monster you can get.
DDA ready
The instrument display also doubles as a control panel for the activation of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. The bike has been built ‘system-ready’ for the data acquisition kit, which consists of special DDA software and a memory key that slots into a plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy new battery charger available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.
Carbon fibre
The Monster 1100 S is a pure concentrate of lightness, power and design. Carbon fibre cam belt covers, silencer guards and front fender reduce weight by a further 1kg (2.2lb) and add exclusivity to the best Monster you can get.
Stopwatch
The digital display is programmed with a stopwatch function that, when enabled, can be triggered by using the high-beam flash button and each recorded time stored in a memory. After your journey or track session, the times or lap times can be recalled from the memory and scrolled through by using the instrumentation buttons on the left-hand switchgear.
LED taillight
An LED rear light unit satisfies the minimalist, weight-saving design ethos found throughout the Monster 696. The specially designed strip of LEDs are enhanced by a special diffuser lens to deliver outstanding light clarity and incredible longevity.
Headlight
The triple-parabola headlight on the Monster 696 utilises the latest optical technology and advanced construction techniques to provide an incredibly compact lighting package. In spite of its compact size, the headlight throws a broad and deep beam to provide excellent visibility and make night riding safer. Viewed from the side, its discrete silhouette mimics the radical shape of the fuel tank.
CONCEPT
Less is Monster
The 'less-is-more' philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati's never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles, but these new models have succeeded in being even more 'pared down' than their predecessors. Every single component has been redesigned and redeveloped so now more than ever, form follows function. With any details detracting from the Monster concept being eliminated, 'less-is-more' also means 'less-is-Monster'. Less weight plus more torque equals fun-filled riding.
S philosophy
The Monster 1100 S is a pure concentrate of lightness, power, design and exclusivity. The ‘S’ features fully adjustable 43mm titanium nitride coated Öhlins forks and a fully adjustable rising-rate Öhlins rear suspension unit. Front brake disc carriers in aluminium help reduce rotating mass, while carbon fibre cam belt covers, silencer guards and front fender reduce weight by a further 1kg (2.2lb). The distinctive racing gold coloured 5-spoke wheels of the Monster 1100 S give it an elegant style and the same sporting look as historical Ducati racing models.
Monster Story
In 1992 Ducati unveiled a new prototype that was to become an icon. Ducati’s creation awed the crowds and the world’s media of that year’s Cologne International Motorcycle show. The 900 Monster was a motorcycle that created a truly new niche – dramatically styled, minimalist in stature yet bristling with innovative engineering solutions. The Monster’s radical styling has also provided the inspiration for an entire after-market sector specialising in hot-rod parts for this legendary machine. For this reason, rarely do you see two Monsters the same. This radical and refreshing design departure also influenced other manufacturers but, as the old adage states: imitation is the highest form of flattery… The Monster is characterised by a long and successful history, by its introduction during the years of numerous cylinders and uncountable colour options, but above all by a constant technological evolution that this year brings us to the birth of two new versions: the Monster 696 and the Monster 1100, representative of a new era of Monster.
Monster ART
‘Logomania’ is the second collection of the innovative Monster Art project and a stunning tribute to famous Ducati logos and colour schemes that span more than 50 years of authentic brand heritage.
Changing the colour and character of any model in the current Monster line-up in just 10 minutes, is the genius of the Monster Art program and a feature that passionately supports the Monster culture of customisation.
Consisting of tank panels, micro-bikini fairing, single-seat cover and front mudguard, the kits have now become a modern canvas in the world of motorcycle art and a unique method of Monster personalisation.
Minimum weight, maximum fun
The Monster 1100 is, by far, the lightest bike in its category. Every single component has been redesigned and redeveloped in order that form would follow function. With any details detracting from the Monster concept being eliminated, the ‘less-is-more’ also means ‘less-is-Monster’. Less weight plus more torque equals fun-filled riding. The Monster 1100 design perfectly balances sports performance, riding pleasure and stunning looks. Its seductive line is the product of a Ducati philosophy where form and function combine to create the naked bike par excellence. Every single component has been created to satisfy a Ducati rider’s needs and provide unrivalled agility and handling. That is why Ducati engineers, designers and testers have aimed for the best possible set-up and the Monster is able to ensure the best handling of all naked bikes.
2011 Ducati Monster 1100-S Features and Benefits
Monster ABS
The 2011 Monster family now offers all models with optional anti-lock braking system (ABS).
The ABS developed by Ducati and offered as an option on the entire Monster family is the most
sophisticated version available in motorcycling. Designed to reduce the risk of wheel-lock under heavy
braking or when braking in low grip conditions, the system reads wheel speed data from phonic wheel
sensors to detect potential wheel lock. If the wheel speed differential falls below a specific safety limit, the control unit immediately reduces the brake system pressure to the appropriate calliper to avoid wheel lock.
The pressure reduction on each individual braking circuit is activated by electronically controlled valves, which then close as the wheel speed differential moves away from a locking scenario.
Monster frame
An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and
structural backbone of all the Monsters. Delivering unparalleled rigidity with minimal mass, the frame
design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity and also enables a very useful 64 degrees of lock-to-lock steering travel. The brand new lightweight aluminium sub-frame maintains visual continuity with the aluminium footrest hangers and swingarm, and is designed to accept a passenger-friendly grab-rail kit available from Ducati Performance. The kit further enhances passenger ride comfort without compromising the Monster’s stylish lines.
Monster instrumentation
Looking clean and minimalist in true Monster style, the brightly illuminated display provides all essential
data by default, and even more by scrolling with the left-hand switchgear. Data includes speed, revs, time, scheduled maintenance, oil temperature and battery voltage, while warning lights illuminate for oil pressure, fuel reserve, turn indicators, high beam and neutral selection. In addition, the instruments present a reserve fuel trip, immobiliser status and automatic light-off function after 60 seconds with the key on as well as a memory to store lap times recorded by using the high-beam flash button as a stopwatch.
The display also doubles as a control panel for the activation of the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) system, which is available as an accessory from Ducati Performance. All Monsters are built ‘system-ready’ for the data acquisition kit, which consists of a special DDA software and memory key that slots into USB style plug under the seat. The same plug also doubles as the connection for a handy ‘battery maintainer’ available as an accessory from Ducati Performance.

2011 Ducati Monster 1100-S PRESS RELEASE
Updates for Superbike, Monster and Streetfighter
With an impressive exhibition presence of approximately 400m2, stand D-040 in hall 8 of Cologne's INTERMOT 2010 show now plays host to exciting new arrivals in the Superbike family in addition to new colours and updates for both the Streetfighter and Monster range. With new models, accessories and apparel, the Italian motorcycle manufacturer from Bologna is showing a wide range of new 2011 products at this major international show.
"We decided to consolidate our presence here in Cologne because we believe in the importance of this exhibition event, which opens the European motor show season," stated Gabriele Del Torchio, President of Ducati Motor Holding, during the opening press conference. "Our presence at the show is proof of our commitment to customers in Germany and northern Europe, and underlines our aim to expand in Germany, which is the second most important market in Europe for Ducati. For this reason we decided to preview here some of the new products scheduled for 2011, such as the new additions to the Superbike family with the 848EVO and 1198 SP, and new liveries for the Monster and Streetfighter models."
Gabriele Del Torchio also commented on the results of the first eight months of 2010: "Despite a shrinking global motorcycle market, we have used Ducati's product policy and the quality of its distribution network to improve both our market share, now at 8.5%, and also to increase our sales by 5% compared to this period 2009."
A huge attendance is expected at the German show and visitors to the Ducati stand are sure to admire the innovative and ground-breaking Multistrada 1200, which made an immediate impact on the market upon debut in March 2010. The current model will not undergo any changes for 2011, confirming its proven design and high standard of quality. INTERMOT is also the first European event to celebrate the Multistrada's victory at the "Pike's Peak International Hillclimb", the famous annual race held high in the Colorado mountains, where riders have to quickly adapt to changing road surfaces. The Multistrada on which American, Greg Tracy, took victory has been specially flown in to Cologne from the US so that fans can share in this major celebration and see further proof of the Multistrada 1200's incredible versatility.
Important additions to the Ducati Superbike family are on show in an exclusive preview of the 2011 range, including the new 848EVO which boasts 140hp and is equipped with Brembo Monobloc callipers and steering damper. The performance-enhanced model celebrates the INTERMOT show by revealing a stunning new "arctic white" livery with sporty red wheels and red frame.
The standard 1198 is also ready to satisfy an ever more demanding market, with the addition of Ducati Traction Control (DTC), the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) and the brand new Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) fitted as standard equipment on all versions. For 2011, the improved 1198 is joined by the exciting new 1198 SP, which enhances the previous 'S' version by rolling out equipped with DTC, DQS, DDA, Ohlins TTX rear suspension, slipper clutch and aluminium fuel tank in addition to the usual Ohlins front suspension, forged Marchesini wheels and lightweight carbon fibre components.
The 2011 Streetfighter S looks impressive in its new colour schemes of red with red frame or diamond black with racing black frame, both with black wheels. A black radiator cover on all versions completes the Streetfighter's aesthetic updates.
Enhanced comfort and safety, in addition to new colour schemes, headline the main updates to Ducati's naked icon, the Monster. The entry level 696 gets new 43mm Marzocchi forks and enhanced ergonomics, including 20mm higher handlebars and a new rear sub-frame designed to accept the user-friendly passenger grab-rail kit available as a Ducati Performance accessory. The Monster 696 presents the two new colour schemes of "dark stealth" and "stone white", perfectly complementing the new matte chrome handlebar finish. The Monster 796, which was launched in April 2010 as an early entry model year 2011, also adopts Marzocchi front suspension and continues its incredible success. Along with the Monster 1100S, the 696 and 796 complete the 2011 range, confirming the family's status as a style and design icon, backed-up by 17 years of Ducati Monster heritage.
INTERMOT will be open to the public until Sunday, 10 October.
